Natural Growth Factor Injections

Natural Growth Factor Injections

Platelet-rich fibrin, often referred to as “liquid gold,” is the next step in the evolution of natural skin rejuvenation. This treatment requires nothing foreign to be injected into the body because it uses your own blood products to stimulate collagen production, increase blood flow, and promote a youthful, vibrant appearance.

What is PRF?

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an autologous blood concentrate that uses your own blood to help rejuvenate your skin. PRF contains growth factors that stimulate and enhance the healing response. PRF in the aesthetics industry is rapidly replacing Platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This shift from PRP to PRF is partly due to the fact that PRF contains higher platelet counts. PRF contains leukocytes (WBC) and mesenchymal stem cells, which PRP does not. With PRF, blood is spun at a much slower centrifuge rate, and there is no added anticoagulation as there is with PRP. This allows for a fibrin matrix to form in this 100% natural product. This fibrin matrix will allow cells to remain more active, resulting in a longer and slower release of growth factors. The robust concentration of cells in the PRF will slowly release growth factors over a more extended period of time, leading to an even better rejuvenation process.

The Simple 3 Step Process

PRF is a 3-step process. First, we use a tiny needle to draw your blood into tubes – the same way you’ve likely had blood drawn at your physician’s office. The number of tubes drawn depends on the size of the treatment areas we want to cover. After the tubes are drawn, they are spun in a centrifuge. This process will then separate red blood cells from the nutrient-rich platelets, fibrin, and stem cells. Once the centrifugation is complete, the top layer will be collected. Your own platelets and white blood cells make up this layer of concentrate (PRF). We can then use the PRF in many areas of your face for natural rejuvenation.

How we use PRF in our practice:

Topically after microneedling treatment, it accelerates healing and further stimulates collagen production for a firm, smooth complexion.

FAQs

Most clients are candidates for PRF therapy. However, PRF therapy is not recommended for individuals who have bleeding/clotting disorders, an active infection, metastatic disease (cancer), are on blood-thinning medications (ex. Coumadin, warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Brilinta), are anemic, liver disease, steroid use in the past 30 days, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Unlike PRP, PRF releases growth factors for a much longer duration, up to one week, compared to PRP, which releases growth factors for only a few hours. The growth factors are what stimulate the stem cells to improve collagen and elastin in the skin. This means that PRF could have more significant and longer-term benefits. The platelets in PRF are thought to be more robust and present in higher levels than those in PRP and promote faster healing.

You may experience temporary redness, swelling, and bruising after treatment at the injection sites. These effects typically resolve within one week. As the PRF cells begin to function, you may feel a slight tingling sensation.

On average, 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are needed to achieve optimal results. However, your provider will develop an individual treatment plan based on your needs and goals.

Current studies show that PRF benefits can last up to 1 year or longer. An added benefit of PRF is that it naturally increases collagen production in the treatment area, prolonging the aesthetic results.

You should be able to resume more of your normal activities immediately after the treatment. However, we recommend scheduling all injectable treatments at least two weeks before any important social event due to the potential for bruising and swelling.

We recommend avoiding all NSAIDs and blood-thinning medications for one week before your treatment and one week after your treatment. These medications can include ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve, vitamin E, fish oil, or Omega 3s. Also, you should avoid alcohol three days before your injections. Your results strongly depend on your hydration status, so we encourage increasing your water intake starting at least three days prior to treatment.
